Unzensiert. Annegret Soltau – Eine Retrospektive | Jetzt im Städel.
Exhibition film

Annegret Soltau’s art has been causing a stir since the 1970s. For a long time, Soltau was considered an insider tip despite her art-historical significance, but today her work is one of the most important positions in feminist staged photography and body art. For the first time, the Städel Museum is dedicating a retrospective to her with over 80 works: from drawings to extended photography and video to installations.

In the film accompanying the exhibition, Annegret Soltau and curator Svenja Grosser provide insights into their collaboration, the central themes and the special features of Soltau’s work.

Annegret Soltau:
I was on a quest

Sculptor Baldur Greiner tells his wife’s personal story including the crucial and sometimes traumatic obstacles she overcame, which would shape her art. Annegret Soltau controlled, harnessed and sewed her emotions into her work. Threads and lines become traces of a life that do not veil the selbst but rather expose it as a totality.

A Biographical Portrait:
60 years and a little bit wiser“

What shaped me in childhood was deprivation. Compared to that time, my life now seems so full in every way – almost as if I were now being allowed to experience the other side of the coin. The deprivation I experienced had such an effect on me that my present life, the person I am now, revolves around it to a great extent. And the loneliness that I often experienced in my childhood is now part of my life as an artist.
